Why is meditation on the breath so important, and how is it presented in different traditions? This talk explored how ānāpānasati, or mindfulness of breathing, forms an important basis for entry into the practice of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. It looked at how “calming the mind” as a prerequisite for insight is a common theme across Buddhist meditation techniques, and how approaches differ between the Theravāda (for example the Mahasi and Goenka approaches) and Mahāyāna traditions (for example in Zen and Vajrayāna). All were welcome, no meditation experience necessary.
