A four-day pilot retreat (13–16 June), with around 30 participants, exploring the connections between Buddhist teachings and deep ecology, camped at Red Cliff on the Yuraygir coast and facilitated by Br. Tenzin, in collaboration with yatra.org.au.
Welcomed onto Yaegl Country by elder Aunty Glenda Kyle, the retreat drew on the practices of “stopping” and looking deeply (śamatha and vipassanā) from the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta, alongside Arne Naess’s Deep Ecology framework and Joanna Macy’s Work That Reconnects. Days combined mindful movement and breath awareness, silent and guided sitting meditation, dharma talks and discussion, with periods of silent walking through beaches, headlands and littoral forest. A closing meditation traced the evolution of life on Earth from the Big Bang, accompanied by an embodied soundscape.
The full write-up, with photos, is on Gaia Forest, which hosted and organised the retreat. A separate photo archive is also available via yatra.org.au.
