Video: Qi-gong — Mindful Movement Practices
A series of movement and breathing practices (57 minutes) drawing on principles found in Qi-gong, Yi-Jin-Jing and Hatha Yoga. The emphasis here is not on drastic changes to joint range of motion, pushing into pain thresholds, or forcing any rapid change in the breath or body — but on interoception, mindfulness gone into the body (kāyagatāsati, kāyānupassanā), and kinaesthetic awareness.
These practices were offered as a morning routine during an introductory calm and insight (śamatha-vipaśyanā) and mettā retreat at the International Buddhist Academy in Kathmandu, as part of the Complete Path Program 2026.
Please note: as in any movement or breath practice, it is important for each individual to recognise and take responsibility for their own physical and mental health situation. Depending on your condition, not all of these movements may be appropriate for you. Seek a qualified teacher for guidance, and consult your doctor to determine if these practices are right for you. With pranayama or qi-gong practices especially, where modification of the breath is indicated, proceed slowly and carefully — read feedback signs from the body such as dizziness, lightheadedness or unpleasant sensations, and if they arise, stop, return to the natural breath, and sit or lie down until the feelings pass.
With deepest gratitude to Guri-ji Rabindra, Varanasi, India, and Sifu Wang, Tien Tai Shan, China.
